At just twenty years old, Mr. Masakazu Saito was a squad leader in the Imperial Army’s Communications Division in Hiroshima. His barracks stood only 1,800 meters from the epicenter, making him one of the closest survivors of the atomic blast. In 2001, he shared his extraordinary story of survival through a series of watercolors with a young American living in Japan.
